Session Three Summary
After discussing the ending of the book, many of us felt that the ending could have been more dramatic. There was so much build up about the key and what would happen and once we found out that it didn't really have a direct impact on him or the outcome of the story we were all rather disappointed. Being that the book was made into a movie we all had thought that the book we be more of a captivating novel. It could have been that we had high expectations, but despite the ending, it was still a good read.
1. How do you think Oskar felt when he found out who his grandfather was?
-Oskar was somewhat shocked, and when he started talking to him and communicating through the sticky notes his grandfather wrote to him, Oskar wanted to know more about him. When Oskar first met him he didn't know it was his grandfather at first but as they kept spending time together, they started to become more and more alike.
2. Do you think Oskar was disappointed about what the key opened?
-Oskar felt that the key was going to get him closer to his father so when he found out it opened the lock of something that belonged to Mr. Black, he was disappointed that his journey was worth someone else's satisfaction other than his own.
3. If you were Oskar's grandfather would you of kept your true identity secret?
-I would've tried to keep a relationship with Oskars grandmother and Oskar and his mother in some way, in order to keep in touch all the years they didn't. But the fact that they didn't in the novel made the story more interesting.
4. How did the key affect Oskar's life?
It allowed him to talk to others more openly and feel comfortable with himself. Meeting new people opened doors for him and made him see people differently and he got a chance to know their stories.
5. Did Oskar and his mother's relationship get stronger or weaker after Oskar found out she always knew about the key?
It got stronger, even though they had a hard time getting along it only made it better for them in the end.
